What is Saffron?

This spice of the gods is naturally grown in the Herat, Parwan, and Balkh Provinces of Afghanistan. Saffron is both a spice and an herbal preparation harvested from the stigma of the naturally-grown Crocus sativus flower.  It is dark orange/red and threadlike in appearance, with a spicy flavour and pungent odour.
  • Saffron is rich in powerful anti-oxidants such as crocin which helps stop the spread & growth of cancer.  Crocetin & crocin also improve memory & learning skills.
  • It enhances activity of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine.
  • It stimulates the digestive system, eases colic & stomach discomfort, & minimizes gas as well as improves circulation & pulmonary oxygenation.
Saffron is best used sparingly in its natural threadlike form.  It should be stored in an airtight, re-sealable container in a cool dark location to maintain its potency. The herb can be frozen. Properly stored saffron can be used for up to two years.  A good measure of the herb's freshness and potency is its odour and colour. If this flavourful spice does not have a noticeable pungent smell, it is probably past its peak.  If it does not have an even dark orange/red colour, it is most likely cut with other herbs/flowers such as marigold to keep the cost down. Another very well known saffron benefit is the use of saffron paste in the treatment of a number of skin conditions when applied topically to the affected parts of the skin. In some cases, saffron is also used to massage the gums in order to reduce inflammation and tenderness.
